Abstract

Active learning strategies assisted by simple media can be an effective alternative for improving the quality of learning and student engagement in elementary schools. This activity is motivated by the low level of student engagement in the learning process, which is still dominated by the lecture method, as well as the limited use of instructional media in the classroom. The objective of this activity is to enhance student engagement at SD Negeri Sidomukti I, Probolinggo Regency, in the behavioral, emotional, and cognitive aspects. Students become more active in asking questions, answering questions, discussing, and demonstrating enthusiasm during the learning process. Furthermore, concrete media help students understand the material more easily and enjoyably. This activity was conducted at SD Negeri Sidomukti I, Kraksaan District, Probolinggo Regency, with the primary targets being elementary school teachers and students. The methods used included observation, interviews, documentation, and direct mentoring for teachers in designing and implementing active learning using simple media. The instructional media used were adapted to the students' learning phases: bottle caps and ice cream sticks for Phase A (Grade I), a diorama of animal life cycles for Grade III, and a pop-up book about the solar system for Grade VI. The learning implementation was carried out through group discussions, media observation, presentations, question-and-answer sessions, and educational games. The results of the activity show that the use of simple media can improve student engagement and also have a positive impact on teachers. Teachers gain new experience in utilizing simple media to support active learning and are able to create a more interactive, creative, and innovative learning atmosphere.
