Abstract

ABSTRACT

Randupitu Village, Probolinggo Regency, faces increasing problems of household organic waste. Improperly managed waste generates odors, environmental pollution, and health risks, mainly due to the community’s limited knowledge and lack of processing facilities. The target partners of this program are village officials, farmer groups, housewives, and youth organizations (Karang Taruna) who are directly involved in daily waste management activities. To address these challenges, the Community Service Program (KKN) team from Universitas Panca Marga introduced an innovation in the form of a stacked bucket composter utilizing EM4 (Effective Microorganisms 4). The method included education, socialization, demonstration, and hands-on practice, enabling participants to gain both theoretical understanding and practical skills in processing organic waste into valuable products. The results showed that the application of EM4 technology effectively accelerated the fermentation process, producing liquid fertilizer rich in nutrients that support plant growth. In addition, solid compost was obtained with crumbly texture and earthy odor, which is beneficial for improving soil structure. The superiority of these organic fertilizer products lies in their environmentally friendly characteristics, odor reduction, and their ability to reduce farmers’ dependency on expensive chemical fertilizers. This program not only provided technical solutions but also fostered environmental awareness and enhanced community skills in managing waste independently and sustainably. Therefore, the application of EM4 technology through stacked bucket composters can serve as an appropriate and practical alternative for household organic waste management in rural communities.
